The 33^rd Annual Congress of the European Association of Tissue and Cell Banks, took place in Tampere, Finland during November 12^th-14^th 2025.

It brought together experts interested in the field of tissue and cell banking, providing a venue for learning, exchanging knowledge, and presenting the latest research developments. Furthermore, the new EU regulation regarding the use of substances of human origin strengthend the importance of the meeting.

The congress took place at Tampere Hall, Finland’s largest and most versatile cultural and congress center and event company. Even though Tampere Hall is situated in the vibrant city center, nature is never far away.

History

The history of the European Association of Tissue and Cell Banks (EATCB) is closely linked to the global development of tissue banking and the necessity for international scientific exchange and European standardization.

The EATCB was originally established under the name European Association of Tissue Banks (EATB) in October 1991 at the first European Conference on Tissue Banking in Berlin. 280 participants from 18 countries agreed to found a scientific organization for professionals in the fields of procurement, processing, and transplantation of cells and tissues.

Meanwhile, a lot of meetings took place.

In the next years, the association focused on regular congresses in various European cities to promote scientific exchange. With scientific progress, the EATCB expanded from classic tissues (such as bone and skin) to more complex therapies.The association adapted its name to reflect the growing importance of cell banks and has since operated as the European Association of Tissue and Cell Banks (EATCB).

Today, the EATCB serves as the central scientific organization for human tissues and cells in Europe. The administrative office is currently located in Hannover, Germany.

following our previous message on the IMPLEMENT-SoHO project, we are pleased to share that the first project activity is now live: the IMPLEMENT-SoHO survey. The survey will remain open from 19 May to 7 June and focuses on familiarity with the SoHO Regulation, implementation challenges, and training and capacity-building needs across the sector. Your responses will directly help shape the future activities and support developed under the project, so we strongly encourage you to participate and share your experience. Booklet - TISSUE DONATION - Everything you need to know, now available online

We would like to draw your attention to a new document that has been prepared by the European Committee on Organ Donation (CD-P-TO) entitled ‘Tissue Donation – Everything You Need to Know’. The document has been written to educate and inform the general public about tissue donation and its benefits, and its development was led by Jacinto Sanchez-Ibanez, a past president of the Association.
